HABERMANN FEEDING-BOTTLES

Breastfeeding children, born with a cleft lip or cleft palate is almost impossible. And because formula is relatively expensive in Guatemala, some parents give their baby water, coffee or even cola. This has the inevitable effect of severe malnutrition. To fight this malnutrition with these babies, we began to instruct the mothers how to extract their milk with a breast pump and then feed their babies with special feeding-bottles, called Habermann bottles. These bottles are really nice for these babies, because they have a special nipple that makes it easier for them to drink. Feeding them this way is the best way to ensure they get all the right nutrients and is cheaper than having to buy formula. Through the Dutch equivalent of E-bay, we were able to buy all bottles that were being offered. And the company Medela, the manufacturer of these bottles, sponsored us with 5 bottles. Unfortunately this still isn’t enough! We still have babies that need these feeding-bottles desperately. In January of 2011 we have an evaluation week in which we will go looking for more children with a cleft lip/ open palate and for this week we need more bottles also. Once again a call for help! Would you like to sponsor one child with a bottle? The costs are $ 34 , – per bottle (this includes shipping and handling costs). We will send you a picture of the child, who you are helping with this tremendous gift.
